Welcome to Tomorrow, Today!
While the tagline of welcome to tomorrow, today is hardly new or original, SciFi Today is going to talk about modern science fiction and fantasy found on television, in the movies and in the bookstores. Ideally, if it’s sci fi and fantasy, then we’re going to talk about it here. Modern science fiction and fantasy is hardly the same as it was twenty years ago or twenty years before that. Hard as it may be for some to believe, Star Trek celebrates 40+ years of history. Generations of children who are engaged by Star Wars the Clone Wars can’t imagine what it was like to see Star Wars on the big screen for the first time in 1977.
Like the new Battlestar Galactica? The original Glen A. Larsen series aired weekly on ABC in the late 70s and rated in the top ten shows. Science fiction is not a niche market anymore, it’s moved mainstream. The mainstreaming of science fiction means we get duds like the Sci Fi series Flash Gordon and gems like the fun, but canceled Dresden Files (also on the Sci Fi Channel). Modern science fiction features serious actors in serious shows such as Edward James Olmos in Battlestar Galactica and John Noble in Fringe, while quirky actors (say hello Zachary Levi) yuk it up and enchant us in series like Chuck.
So welcome to Sci Fi Today, where we’ll talk about everyone from Theodore Sturgeon to Kelly Armstrong, from the Thunderbirds to Battle of the Planets to Star Wars: Clone Wars, from Star Trek to Star Wars to Smallville and so much more. If it’s science fiction and it’s fantasy, we’re going to talk about it.
